The 4 resorts in the Salzburg Saalachtal
Lofer – and its historic market
With its historic market and the stunning backdrop of the impressive Loferer Steinberge mountain range, the town of Lofer really is as pretty as a picture. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart even came here and for many years it has provided an ideal location for all kinds of film productions. Famous names who have passed through include "James Bond", Clint Eastwood, Richard Burton, Maximilian Schell and Erol Sander, star of the popular TV series “Alpenklinik”. But it is not only famous actors who are attracted to Lofer - there are also plenty of regular visitors who come to admire the unspoilt countryside of this wonderful part of the world and enjoy the warm hospitality of the locals. In summer, Lofer is a mecca for keen sports fans as well as those looking for a place to relax and unwind. During the winter months the Almenwelt Lofer, with its network of modern lifts, is a popular destination for skiers and snowboarders.
St. Martin – traditional village life
A rural idyll: flower-decked farmhouses, a church surrounded by cosy pubs, gently babbling streams, wild herbs growing beside quiet country lanes and delicious produce from local farms - St. Martin really does have a special rural charm all its own.
In the summer months, people flock here to enjoy walking and mountain-climbing, or just to relax. But many also come here on a pilgrimage to Maria Kirchental - Kirchental is the name of the valley just above St. Martin – one of the most popular pilgrimage sites in Austria and site of the world’s largest exhibition of votive paintings. Next to the "Pinzgauer Dom" – the baroque church built by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach – there are also sacred sites, the “Haus der Begegnung” retreat and a delightful restaurant, much-frequented by toboggan fans in winter.
Unken – gateway to the Saalachtal
Unken has much to offer at all altitudes and the centre of the town down in the valley is the gateway to the Saalachtal. A tranquil place with vast expanses of meadowland and attractive gate trails, Unken also boasts great facilities such as a large leisure centre with an open-air pool, indoor pool, fitness centre and sauna complex. Cross the wide Unkner Boden plain and you then climb gently to picturesque Heutal – a small but select winter ski area with excellent pistes, ski touring routes and cross-country trails. In summer this is also superb walking and mountainbiking country.
Weissbach Nature Park & mountaineering village
With its historic heart, unspoilt alpine meadows and wonderfully diverse mountain scenery, Weissbach well deserves its “Nature Park” status and is a fine example of Man and Nature in close harmony. Whether it’s at the magnificent Seisenbergklamm gorge, strolling through lush meadows or hiking up a rugged mountain, on a guided walk (with one of the park guides) or from a rock face at one of the climbing gardens… the wonders of nature and the lovingly cultivated landscape of this region are just waiting to be admired!
